Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The true challenge facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
