The New Mayor Promises a 'New Era' for New York City in Maiden Address
During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his term.

A Sweeping Blueprint
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:
- Subsidized daycare
- Fare-free public buses
- A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Dynamics
The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past comments.
Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
