The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.
He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
