The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
