RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
