Astronaut Discloses Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The mission was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was buried under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, including elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
